Sarajevo was written at the invitation of pianist Michael Houstoun, who premiered the work in a programme of New Zealand music during the 1996 International Festival of the Arts in Wellington. The work is a reflection of the horrors and futility of the Bosnian war and was partly inspired by seeing Emir Kusturica’s film Underground. The three movements are dedicated respectively to John Young, John Psathas and Ross Harris, the composer’s former colleagues at the Victoria University of Wellington School of Music.
