Description:
Sygyt was written for the Wellington-based throat-singer Jonny Marks, and exploits two of the main types of Tuvan throat-singing, sygyt and kargyraa. The ensemble imitates, extrapolates and surrounds the throat-singer, drawing on resonances of the harmonic series to create a constantly shifting backdrop. Live electronics also process and sustain the singer in real time, adding further texture and spatialisation. Sygyt was premiered by Stroma (cond. Hamish McKeich) and Jonny Marks on 16 November 2017 at City Gallery Wellington. Sygyt received the 2018 SOUNZ Contemporary Award.
