Three Sea Changes takes its title from the first piece of the set, which was composed in 1945. The second piece dates from 1950, while the third was written in 1972 and revised in 1981. They were first performed as a set in 1982 by Margaret Nielsen, and were published by Wai-te-ata Music Press in 1988.
