Lilburn completed the Symphony No. 2 in May 1951. It was first performed in December 1953, in a studio broadcast given by the National Orchestra, conducted by Warwick Braithwaite. The first public performance was given in the Wellington Town Hall on 23 June 1959, when the National Orchestra was conducted by John Hopkins. There are three commercial recordings of the Symphony No. 2, all performed by the NZSO: 1) conducted by Ashley Heenan in 1975 (Kiwi LP SLD-48, re-isssued on CD SLD-90 and Stradivari SCD 8004), 2) conducted by John Hopkins in 1992 (Continuum CCD 1069), 3) conducted by James Judd in 2001 (Naxos 8.555862). A miniature score of Symphony No. 2 was published by Price Milburn Music in 1979. (Copies are still available from Wai-te-ata Music Press). Parts are available from the National Library of New Zealand.
