Description:
The Nine Short Pieces were selected from a larger number of manuscripts composed over the years 1961–1966. Margaret Nielsen gave the first performance in 1968. As she writes: ‘The pieces are brief, each with its own character, and tersely constructed from a single idea. Nine pieces were eventually selected from the collection, and an effective sequence gradually emerged, either to provide sharp contrasts, or to sustain a particular style and atmosphere.’ Nine Short Pieces is recorded by Tessa Birnie on Kiwi SLD-19, and by Margaret Nielsen on Manu CD1511.
