Description:
Stapes is the first piece in a series of three works collectively entitled Middle Ear. The stapes is the smallest in the chain of three bones that transmits vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear, part of the apparatus that transforms sound waves into the nerve signals we understand as sound. In this piece, the players work both together and against each other, in individual and collective struggles for articulacy. Stapes was premiered by NZTrio, under the auspices of the Karlheinz Company, at the University of Auckland Music Theatre, 8 October 2005. It was also performed by members of the Luxembourg Sinfonietta, as part of the 2007 ISCM/ACL World Music Days in Hong Kong, where it was awarded first prize in the ACL Young Composer Competition. Stapes is recorded by NZTrio—Justine Cormack (violin), Ashley Brown (cello), Sarah Watkins (piano)— on Lightbox (Rattle Records RAT-d058).
