Lyell Cresswell composed the Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra in 2009. It is dedicated to the memory of his close friend, the composer Edward Harper, who died that year. It was commissioned by Dr. Jack C. Richards, and was premiered by Stephen de Pledge and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hamish McKeich, on 13 May 2011.
